How will this make a difference

This national research resource will support researchers to answer urgent and important COVID-19 questions. Researchers will study the COVID-19 virus and its outcomes. And how the pandemic and lockdown has affected our health and wellbeing. In both cases, researchers will need data from longitudinal studies and linked health records.

Yinghui Wei is an Associate Professor of Statistics at the University of Plymouth

Magnifying glassShe develops ways of looking at statistics and explores how they can be used to study data in medicine and health.

In her MRC fellowship grant, “Using data to improve public health: COVID-19 secondment”, she works within the COVID-19 Longitudinal Health and Wellbeing National Core Study to understand the effects of COVID infection on health. Yinghui also investigates what puts people at risk for long COVID and the challenges of diagnosis.

The UK LLC Trusted Research Environment provides secure access to data over time from multiple studies across the UK, and these studies are linked to NHS COVID records. This allows Yinghui to look at the differences in self-reported and GP-diagnosed long COVID, in order to identify which patients are less likely to get a formal diagnosis.

Mark Green is a Health Geographer from the University of Liverpool

House iconTheir research investigates how the places and social conditions we live in affect our health. In their MRC-funded “Using data to improve public health: COVID-19 secondment”, Mark examines how the pandemic has disrupted and delayed things like surgeries, appointments, treatment and screenings.

Because the UK LLC Trusted Research Environment holds so much data from studies based across the UK from different time periods, this enables Mark to investigate experiences of healthcare disruption – who has been impacted and in what ways. Having all of this data available from so many sources securely in one place allows Mark to investigate these issues in more detail than before.
