Lay Summary

Suicide is currently the leading cause of death for adolescents and young adults in the UK. Recent research has shown that the time period spanning secondary schooling is a prime time to identify school students who might self-harm or have suicidal thoughts that might lead to an attempt to take their own lives. To understand the factors (e.g., domestic abuse, bullying, or loneliness) that associated with future self-harm or suicidal attempts, it is important to examine this relationship using longitudinal studies, which follow a large number of UK-born citizens from birth to later stages of life. This way, we could gather reliable scientific evidence of why adolescents self-harm, which could be related to their families, the schools, and the environments.

Once we gathered this information, we can share with the scientific community and with policy makers, who will participate in designing and carrying out interventions that aim to reduce self-harm and suicide.
