| Lay Summary | Evidence suggests that increased long-term exposure to air pollution is linked to individuals being at higher risk of being infected with COVID-19. It suggests that if a person becomes infected with COVID-19, there is a higher chance of worse symptoms and requiring more medical care if that person has been exposed to higher levels of air pollution previously. Existing research studies have not always taken account of other potentially important factors such as underlying medical conditions and differing groups of people and locations. By analysing data from multiple studies in different locations, and detailed information about each participant (e.g., underlying health conditions), we can find out if there is an increased risk of infection and worse outcomes from infection. We propose to investigate these links, taking into account other risk factors of COVID-19 and severity of disease, to identify the link between air pollution exposure and COVID-19 related outcomes. This will provide more strength to current calls to reduce air pollution emissions, highlighting its link to infectious diseases in addition to associated increased risk of other conditions such as asthma, heart disease and diabetes. The findings may encourage further research into the link between lung infections and air pollution exposure. |
